Because of John Brown\’s Harpers Ferry raid, Virginia governor Henry Wise asked William Gilham to write a manual for the instruction of militia. Gilham at the time was a professor at the Virginia Military Institute, along with Thomas Jackson. Our reproduction is a copy of an early 1861 edition, one without illustrations. Cloth bound.
