The Servant's Directory - Need to know how to buy a goose or turkey? How about how to take paint out of silk? How about to clean pictures to their greatest Perfection? This 65 page book from 1762, is the ancestor of all of the handy household hints of today. An enjoyable book to read, but we don't guarantee any of the hints. The last four pages contain tables to calculate expenses for a day, a week, a month or a year. For example, an expense of a penny a day works out to 7 pennies per week, 2 shillings 4 pence per month, and 1 pound, 10 shillings, 5 pence for a year. There is also a pricing guide, where if somethings costs 3 pence per pound, and you purchased 10 pounds worth of goods, your cost would be 2 shillings 6 pence. That expense table is actually a pretty handy pay table to calculate soldier's pay.
